Many of the schools that we serve have seen success recently by offering what is called "second chance breakfast." Basically, the idea is that schools have quick, grab-and-go items available throughout the morning for students who are running late or not hungry right away in the morning but still need something to eat to start their day and get them through until lunch. Second chance breakfast provides students who might not like what is being offered as the main breakfast option additional options to choose from.
Why Second Chance Breakfast
-
Options for students arriving too late for main breakfast due to bus schedules, early morning activities or for other reasons.
-
Options for students who don't feel hungry first thing in the morning.
-
Helps students overcome social stigma associated with eating school breakfast.
-
Helps overcome hunger, as only 18 million out of 31 million students eat breakfast at school yet nearly 1 in 5 children in America have food insecurity.
-
Results in higher academic performance. Schools can see up to 17.5 % higher test scores thanks to breakfast.
-
Improves student concentration.
-
Improves memory recall.
-
Improves classroom behavior, focus and learning.
-
Results in less tardiness and absenteeism.
